Mental Health and Wellbeing Service
Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Service incorporates Counselling, Psychotherapy, and Mental Health Support.
We are staffed by qualified and trainee Psychological Therapists and Mental Health Case Workers and offer appointments to students Monday - Friday. Appointments are available at various times and on various days at each campus, with some evening appointments. However, please note there is variation from campus to campus with regards to what we are able to provide.
We offer a range of support including, guided self-help, person-centred counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, mental health support, or referrals to specialist services, etc. Your first appointment will usually be an assessment of your needs, and identifying your goals that you want to achieve. The appointment will last up to 90 minutes, but usually less. We then may suggest different interventions such as those previously listed, and in some instances, may recommend a referral to an external organisation that could be more suited to your needs.
Approximately 490 students last year (2017/18) sought some support from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, for a range of different issues. These typically include low mood, anxiety or stress, bereavement, homesickness, eating problems, abuse, relationship difficulties, self-esteem or low confidence, loneliness, hopelessness, etc.
We strive to offer appointments quickly, and we recommend that you take the first appointment we can offer you, as you may have to wait longer for future appointments to be made free. At peak times, the wait may be up to 2 or 3 weeks for your first appointment. We do apologise for this. However, it is worth noting that we will always be quicker than local NHS counselling and mental health services. Average waiting times in 2018/19 have so far been around 14 days (from point of referral to first appointment).
88% of students who have used our service would strongly recommend it to a friend.
